The painter of this vase has injured both honesty and modesty. Represented are two totally naked Bacchantes who are rubbing themselves, probably with some wine, to anoint their bodies and nearby are a Faun, or Silene. These two women, who by their preparations and their shiny bodies as prescribed by law, are disposed perhaps to assist in the mysteries of Bacchus. We will next recount here the lecherous indecencies which are done in these primitive rites and which form the foundations for the reproachings of the Gentiles by the apologists of the Christian religion.
